BASIS.ed 5-7

The BASIS.ed curriculum in grades 5 through 7 continues to help students develop academic and organizational skills that will prepare them for the demanding courses offered in grades 8-12. Whereas the Primary Program is primarily taught in integrated 85-minute blocks, Intermediate students move to a different class and teacher every 50 minutes, which presents an exciting challenge for them. In each of these classes, students learn different strategies in order to adopt the responsibility and autonomy of a true BASIS student. We recognize that the abilities to organize time and to manage and control oneself are not innate; we must all learn these skills with practice and support. Our Middle School teachers provide this support every day as their students fine-tune these skills.

Our Intermediate curriculum introduces students to some of the major concepts and skills that they will utilize later in AP courses, first in interdisciplinary courses such as Classics, Human Geography, Introduction to Science, and Engineering & Technology, and later in specific courses such as Physics and World History. Students will revisit these concepts often in a "spiral" of increasing depth and complexity.

For instance, the concept of homeostasis is introduced in 6th grade Biology with a focus on the organ systems of the human body; in 7th grade Biology, homeostasis is further studied in diverse systems of life on earth; by 8th grade Biology, students expand on their knowledge as they focus on how genetic mutations and cancers affect homeostasis at the cellular level. In this way, students have mastered this material by the time they enroll in AP courses.

Our curriculum in these grades is designed to provide one of the most advanced and comprehensive middle school programs available in the world, fully integrating the sciences, arts, math, language and reading. By the end of middle school, students have delved deeply into the critical importance of organization and time management, so that they can conquer the high school curriculum.
